8. Bathed in Light
This is my spirit song. The splashy guitar chords bring out the meaning of the title. Sometimes when we’re bogged down in the details of things, we can get a little depressed. But when we put things into proper perspective, the clouds part and we see a rainbow. I was having one of those moments when I wrote this song. I wrote it at a time when I was going through some challenges, and for a brief moment, there was a ray of hope in the situation and I remembered the deeper reality of things.
I played this song totally with a pick. Although I specialize in the touch technique, I use a pick when the music calls for it, and in this case I wanted the warm tone and the punchy dynamics that comes from using the pick.
Kenwood Dennard played drums and keyboard at the same time live in the studio. This is a unique talent of his, and I feel that it glues the drums and keyboard together in an organic and seamless way that would be hard to get using overdubs. I wanted to keep the group tight and focused so I didn't hire a keyboard player for the session.
Nick and Kenny are just awesome on this. They totally understood the spiritual nature of the song and they added just the right nuances to enhance the musical concept.
